SERCAP's Housing Department to Assist Family of Two in Montgomery County, VA!
Recently, SERCAP’s Housing Department received approval to begin a new project in Montgomery County, VA, in order to help a low-income couple (one of whom is disabled) to make ADA (American Disabilities Act) design improvements to their bathroom. The current bathroom has proven to be a safety hazard, since one of the clients has fallen several times. The project was referred to SERCAP by the New River Valley Disability Resource Center, and SERCAP’s Housing Staff worked with the internal committee, that oversees Program Income projects, to get the project approved.
Once construction begins, SERCAP will work with the contractor to make several repairs to the bathroom, including: installing grab bars, widening the doorway, and installing a new Shower with ADA features and a shower-seat. The total cost of the project is estimated at $10, 350.00, and SERCAP has awarded the clients a forgivable loan through Program Income Funds (part of the Indoor Plumbing & Rehabilitation Program), to cover the full cost of the upgrades. Construction will begin later this month, and the couple will once again have a safe home in which they can remain for many years to come.
Without SERCAP’s Housing Rehabilitation Program, and other similar services, many low-income individuals and communities would be forced to go without such necessities as reliable access to clean drinking water, indoor plumbing, safe and affordable housing, community development and infrastructure needs, water/wastewater infrastructure solutions, and more. It is important to remember that even in the US in the 21st Century; there are those who do not have reliable access to clean, safe drinking water, environmentally sound septic facilities, and affordable housing. In order to help SERCAP continue to provide assistance to both the individuals and communities in need, please consider making a donation to SERCAP’s Water Life! Fund!
*SERCAP’s Housing Program is primarily made possible through the Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development’s (DHCD) Indoor Plumbing & Rehabilitation (IPR) Program, through County Funds (Budget Appropriations) from counties across the Commonwealth of Virginia, and through Program Income Funds from the IPR Program. Additionally, all of SERCAP’s programs in Virginia are leveraged by support from the Virginia Budget Appropriation, granted by the Virginia General Assembly and administered by DHCD.
