SERCAP---Social-Media-Campaign-1---Housing-1

Recently, SERCAP’s Housing Department assisted a low-income senior citizen living in the Town of Dillwyn in Buckingham County, VA, as part of the Dillwyn Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) project. The client’s house, built in 1940, was in need of a number of significant repairs in order to bring it back into compliance with HUD Housing Quality Standards (HQS). However, due to the client’s low-income status, they were unable to afford the cost of the repairs on their own, without suffering significant financial hardship. Fortunately, SERCAP was able to qualify them for assistance through the Town of Dillwyn CDBG Project, which covered the full cost of the necessary repairs.

For this housing rehabilitation project, the structure required multiple significant repairs, including: replacement of both the front and back porches, installation of a handicap ramp, installation of a new HVAC system, installation of 12 new insulated windows, replacement of both the front and back doors, repairs to the interior ceilings, upgrades to the electrical service panel, replacement of galvanized pipes, replacement of the bathroom floors, replacement of the sinks and showers in both bathrooms, patches and repairs to holes in the wall, and painting of the interior of the home. Construction for the project was awarded to Cornelius Walton, a local contractor, for the full $37,700.00 project cost. The work was recently completed, and the client once again has an affordable home that is warm, safe, and dry.

Without SERCAP’s full slate of Programs and Services, many rural communities and low-to-moderate income (LMI) individuals would be forced to go without such necessities as reliable access to clean drinking water, indoor plumbing, safe and affordable housing, community development and infrastructure needs, water/wastewater infrastructure solutions, and more. It is important to remember that even in the US in the 21st Century; there are those who do not have reliable access to clean, safe drinking water, environmentally sound septic facilities, and affordable housing. In order to help SERCAP continue to provide assistance to both the individuals and communities in need, please consider making a donation to SERCAP’s Water Life! Fund!
